Bring Your Own Phone

From now on, customers will have the option to transfer their Safelink service into a smartphone. That smartphone will have to be provided by the applicant.

In order for ST agents to verify this information, they will have to create an application for the customer and follow the enrollment procedure as usual. Once the customer‘s PII is introduced and the Qualification Method is also specified, agents will be guided to the Device Info section, where ST agents will be able to indicate that the customer is interested in applying through the BYOP procdure, as long as this option is available in the applicant’s zip code:

If customers want to use their own cell phone, the bring your own phone option will have to be checked. As soon as this option is selected, the Carriers section will become available. Applicants will have to select among the different options provided:

The carrier availability will depend on the area where the customer is located. Some locations will have more options available than the rest.

As you can see, there will be an option, GSM Unlocked Phone, that will always be available. Since there is no need to find out information about any carrier when selecting this options, it is recommended for ST agents to present this option first. In this way, agents do not need to make further questions in regards to this procedure:

Agent: Since you have selected the Bring your own phone option, may I know if the smartphone that you will use is Unlocked? Or does it have a specific carrier?

On the other hand, if customers mention that they have a specific provider, agents will have to present the carriers available for the location where the customer resides.

If the applicant does not have a Smartphone of their own, they may request one if that option is available where they reside. By pressing on the BRING YOUR OWN PHONE box, ST agents will be able to see if the Free Safelink Smartphone option is available:

The difference between requesting a cell phone from Safelink and bringing their own phone is that, if applicants select the latter option, they will receive additional 500 MB of data for the first three months.

By selecting the BYOP option, customers will be shipped a SIM card instead of a cell phone.
